We find that claims against general practitioners (GPs) are rare in Ireland when compared with
other claims of medical negligence. One of the reasons for this is that you may have developed a
relationship over time with your GP and have a sense of loyalty to them. This is entirely
understandable although certain claims of negligence against GPs can be very serious.

GPs have an established duty of care to their patients and we have set out some of the most
common forms of negligent treatment that can arise;

  • Failure to diagnose a medical condition at all, or in a timely manner;
  • Failure to refer a patient to a specialist;
  • Failure to act on test results;
  • Misinterpretation of test results;
  • Prescription of incorrect medication or dosage of medication;
